about

El Tanbura بور فؤاد, Egypt

El Tanbura is a collective of veteran Egyptian master musicians, singers, fishermen and philosophers. For nearly twenty- five years they’ve been custodians to some of Egypt’s oldest folk melodies at their home in Port Said, the Mediterranean gateway to the Suez Canal. My lover is like a delicate branch

When the branch smiles on me
My eyes don’t sleep
When I caught sight of your beauty

The sad cry of the turtledove and pigeons
On the branches
On the branches, my lover
The sad cry of the turtledove and pigeons on the branches
On the branches, my lover
The sad cry of the turtledove and pigeons filled my romantic heart with nostalgia
Oh eye, Oh night
The poor heart of the lover is consumed with much suffering

Oh you who appeared from afar,
Don’t worry, take it easy

Oh Lally, Lally, Lally
How beautiful your black eyes are
Oh Lally, Lally, Lally

You have enchanted my soul - and I am your slave
